Welcome to the seventh edition of the Rising Star Monitor (RSM), where we provide a snapshot of the trends and challenges involved in young, high-potential ventures in Belgium. Our insights are based on data gathered from 144 young, high-potential Belgian ventures with 175 founders, an average age of 3 years and in a wide cross-section of industries. For a more detailed understanding, and comparability to our previous editions, we have -where relevant- split our results between high- versus low-growth ambition ventures (HGV versus LGV).
Our study suggests that only 34% of all entrepreneurs starting high-potential ventures also have high growth ambitions. Most of the entrepreneurs still prefer to have their ventures at a size they can manage themselves. Across all seven editions of our Rising Star Monitor, the picture that arises of these high-potential ventures hence remains stable. Finding and retaining employees is considered the biggest challenge by most young high-potential ventures: the war for talent is real. Therefore, this edition of the Rising Star Monitor takes a deep dive into this war for talent, examining what companies struggle exactly with when it comes to their employees, what they offer to prospective employees and what those are looking for. Continuing our tradition from previous editions, we also report on founding team remuneration, including both equity and cash, to provide an objective benchmark for founders trying to determine a fair wage and equity split.
